How to Recondition a Hybrid Battery – A Step-by-Step Guide

You own a hybrid vehicle. You have noticed that of late its battery performance is not as it used to be.

The thought of buying a new hybrid battery does not go well with you. Probably due to the high cost.

Don’t worry, there is an affordable option for you; DIY battery reconditioning.

Hybrid battery reconditioning is a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly way to extend the life of older batteries. These programs combine a number of different reconditioning techniques to return batteries to operate as efficiently as possible.

What is hybrid battery reconditioning?

Reconditioning is the process of restoring a worn-out or damaged item back to its original condition. Hybrid battery reconditioning is a method of recharging the hybrid batteries and extending their life span while preserving the environment by reducing waste.

The process entails restoring the original capacity of hybrid batteries to as close to 100% as possible.

Why should you recondition your hybrid battery?

Hybrid batteries are expensive, and if you can save some money on their maintenance, why not?

Besides, hybrid batteries have a limited life span. After a certain period of time, the battery will start to lose its capacity to store energy. Reconditioning can extend the life of the battery.

Reconditioning is also beneficial for the environment.

The process reduces your carbon footprint by extending the battery’s lifespan and cutting down on waste by using recycled parts from hybrid batteries that would otherwise be thrown away in landfills.

The process also cuts down on pollution associated with making new batteries out of raw materials like lead and lithium. It also helps reduce toxic emissions during manufacturing processes as well as during use due to less wear and tear. Reconditioning is an environmentally-friendly solution to extend your hybrid battery’s lifespan while saving yourself some money in the process.

Steps by step:

Step 1: Charge the battery pack to 100%.

Start by charging the battery to its full capacity and take note of the voltage. As expected, the voltage will stop once the battery attains its maximum charge capacity. full charge ensures that the voltage depression is broken.

Step 2: Discharge the battery

Discharge the battery to about 0.8V per cell. This is where you start seeing the degradation in the battery and it’s still fully functional. Ensure that you verify the pack level of your battery before the charging and discharging processes.

During the first charge cycle, be keen to ensure that the battery capacity does not go below 0.8V per cell.

Step 3: Repeat step 1:

In this step, you simply need to redo the step1 procedure.

Step 4: Repeat step 2.

Repeat the same step2 procedure but this step discharge until it reaches the 0.6V capacity instead of 0.6V battery capacity per cell. Also here, ensure that it does not go below 0.6 V.

Step 5: Charge again.

In this step, you simply need to redo the previous steps to ensure that your battery is redone to its full capacity. This will ensure that the battery starts with a fresh charge and you can experience less wear and tear on your hybrid battery pack. You may also choose to recharge the battery pack for an extra boost of power, or for when it runs low on power. This time you can discharge it to 0.5 V per cell

The important thing here is not just to completely discharge any existing energy in your hybrid vehicle’s batteries but more importantly, to reset it back to its original state.

Step 6: Final charge

After about three cycles of charging and discharging, you can now proceed to charge the battery for one last time. Charge the battery for at least 6 hours, even after it has attained its full capacity. This will allow the battery to settle down and will help it maintain its integrity.

Step 7: Disconnect the charger from the battery

Finally, disconnect the charger from your hybrid vehicle’s battery pack. You need to wait for about two hours after the charger is disconnected from the battery pack before disconnecting it from your vehicle. This will allow any residual charge in the battery to dissipate and will prevent damage to the battery’s cells.

Conclusion

The result of this procedure should be a fully charged and functional hybrid vehicle’s battery pack. This is a very simple procedure and can be completed by anyone with basic knowledge of cars and electrical engineering.
